Kinja'd!!!

This iPhone 5C ad is on the back cover of the Popular Science I recently got in the mail, and after looking at it for a long time, I still don't get it. Why are there cities under different iPhone color combinations...? I feel like the answer will be super obvious and I'll just feel stupid, but oh well.

Because Apple and innovation and pretty and philosophical, yo. It is meant to mimic the places in Steve Jobs' heaven.

Something about AT&T's coverage?

Who knows. It's Apple. None of their ads have anything to do with the product.

Here's my best guess:
Menlo Park = Thomas Edison = light = yellow
Cooperstown = baseball = grass = green
Kitty Hawk = first flight = sky = blue
Sea of Tranquility = moon = space = black

The cities represent important milestones.

1. Menlo Park - Site of T. A. Edison's Lab

2. Cooperstown, NY - Birthplace of Samuel Morse, inventor of Morse Code

3. Kitty Hawk, NC - site of the Wright Brother's first flight

4. Sea of Tranquility - Site on the moon, associated with the Apollo missions

The only thing I can come up with is that these places are associated with paradigm shifts in technology. As for the colors, im not sure yet.

Yeah the only ones I was familiar with was Kitty Hawk and Sea of Tranquility but the other 2 I thought were random. Weird ad though, I'd bet most people don't know any of that stuff.

And the letters "hon" of "iPhone" peeking through the one hole looks awful.

You read PopSci and can't understand Apple's cryptic ads designed especially for smart people?!?!

I'm just playin'...
This ad is definitely catering to a much smaller audience than 99% of their ads.

I didn't get it until I read the other explanations. Maybe they wanted it to be so confusing that people would post the ad online on forums and get even more viewers o_O

This is a guess, yellow for the light bulb, Edison worked in Menlo Park. Green for grass, Cooperstown is the location of the baseball hall of fame. Blue for the sky, Kitty Hawk, Wright brothers flew. Black for space, Sea of Tranquility is on the moon.
